Assessing + Preventing Unconscious Bias in Professional Regulation
Workshop

The concept of unconscious or implicit bias has become prominent in recent years. Professional regulatory organizations are attempting to understand how unconscious bias can impact decisions and what can be done to mitigate the risks of the impact of unconscious bias.

Join Katrina Haymond and former partner, Ayla Akgungor for this half-day interactive virtual workshop, where participants will review and engage in the following topics:

  • Unconscious bias overview: learn and understand what unconscious bias is and how it affects how we behave and make decisions.
  • The science behind unconscious bias: review studies on unconscious bias and what the research has revealed about its impact on decision-making.
  • Assessing unconscious bias: discuss examples of unconscious bias, including a review of the most up-to-date cases discussing its legal impact. Working in break out groups, participants will discuss scenarios based on issues that commonly arise in the professional regulatory context. Participants will work through a series of questions to identify where unconscious bias may arise in their decision-making. Following their discussions, participants will be given tips to attempt to mitigate potential concerns.
  • Addressing unconscious bias: learn strategies to identify and check your own unconscious biases.

Who should attend? This workshop is specifically designed for staff and members of committees and tribunals from professional regulatory organizations.

Original presentation: April 28, 2022
