Ben Civil is an articling student in our Calgary office. He enjoys the process of breaking down complex problems into actionable and practical steps for clients. He believes that the obstacle in the path becomes the path. Ben also brings a great amount of patience and empathy to his dealings with others and hopes to use these attributes throughout his legal career to best assist clients.

Prior to entering law school, Ben obtained his Bachelor of Sport Management and worked in various roles within the sports industry. He regularly draws on his experiences working in fast-paced and ever-changing environments to help clients in many different industries.

While attending law school at Queen’s University, Ben was able to benefit from a wide array of practical learning experiences. He was an oralist in the Hockey Arbitration Competition of Canada where he finished as a semi-finalist, was a Senior Associate Editor of the Queen’s Law Journal, acted as a 1L Tutor, and led a pro bono project for Developmental Services Ontario. While at Queen’s, Ben was awarded the Queen’s Law Course Prize in Contracts law.

Ben recently had his final paper in International Sports Law selected for publication in the Sports Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada’s (SDRCC) newsletter.

Outside the Office

Ben is a passionate sports fan and is always keeping tabs on his favourite Toronto sports teams. He also enjoys golfing, camping, and collecting new vinyl records.
