Laura MacFarlane

Laura MacFarlane is a Calgary-based Partner whose practice focuses on intellectual property, employment and insurance law. She is a Registered Canadian Trademark Agent and a member of Field Law’s Intellectual Property + Technology, Labour + Employment and Insurance practice groups. Laura provides strategic legal advice and representation to clients across a range of industries in Canada and internationally.

Laura has extensive experience advising and representing clients in intellectual property disputes involving trademarks, patents, copyright and trade secrets. She is an experienced advocate both in and out of the courtroom and has successfully obtained and resisted injunctive relief on behalf of her clients. Laura also helps clients resolve intellectual property disputes through negotiated settlements and other practical, commercially focused solutions.

As a Registered Canadian Trademark Agent, Laura assists clients with trademark clearance, protection, registration and commercialization, as well as the development and management of trademark portfolios. Her intellectual property work spans a range of industries, including technology, consumer goods, heavy industrial machinery, lifestyle brands, food and beverage and restaurants.

In her employment practice, Laura advises employers, employees and contractors on a range of workplace matters, with particular experience at the intersection of employment law and intellectual property rights. She also develops and advises on workplace policies, including the evolving legal and employment considerations associated with the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace.

In her insurance practice, Laura acts primarily for insurers in claims defence matters involving casualty, motor vehicle claims, accident benefits, property loss, personal injury, professional liability, errors and omissions and bad faith claims.

Laura also represents clients in commercial and general litigation matters, including contractual disputes and defamation claims.
