  • Legal Assistant, Wills, Estates + Trusts - Calgary

    • This is a role where you will work with a variety of our firm’s team members and will be responsible for completing a variety of tasks for lawyers doing work in the practice area of wills, estates and trusts.

      You must understand the importance of confidentiality in a professional setting and have great attention to detail. You are organized and able to focus on the task at hand.       Duties + Responsibilities

      • Booking appointments and managing of lawyer’s calendars.
      • Scheduling meetings and/or questioning and mediations.
      • Providing back-up for other assistants in their absence.
      • Entering lawyer’s time.
      • Billing, including client follow up on outstanding A/R.
      • Coordinating searches: Titles, encumbrances, plans, taxes + corporate.
      • Submitting/Filing documents (i.e., LTO, Courthouse).
      • Accessing online legal resources.
      • Responding to internal and external requests.
      • Meeting/liaising/reporting to clients.
      • Organizing documents and binders.
      • Ensuring file management system is kept current.
      • Submitting lawyer’s receipts for reimbursement.
      • Managing the diarization of important dates.
      • Overseeing the opening and closing of files as well as filing of physical documents.
      • Preparing letters and legal documents as well as amending and comparing.
      • Retrieving physical copies of wills/epa/pds; drafting and providing authorizations to release.
      • Estate litigation – Court filings, compiling and bookmarking affidavits/briefs/applications/orders for filing and service.
      • Submissions; sending out releases; distributing the funds after everything is finalized to all listed beneficiaries; sending out reporting letters.
      • Introductory packages for new clients re estate planning matters – drafting and providing retainer letters and estate planning questionnaires; obtaining client contact information; explaining estate planning processes.
      • Other tasks as assigned 

      Qualifications + Skills

      • Recognized 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma.
      • Experience working in the wills + estates practice area.
      • Experience working in a litigation environment (WET area an asset) and filing Court documents.
      • Knowledge of the OPGT submissions and requirements an asset.
      • Advanced computer skills.
      • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
      • Excellent follow-up and bring-forward skills.
      • Strong analytical skills and problem solving with minimal supervision.
      • Ability to prioritize effectively and handle high pressure deadlines.

  • Paralegal, Debt Recovery + Foreclosure - Edmonton

    • Our Edmonton office is looking for a Debt Recovery + Foreclosure Paralegal to work with a variety of our firm’s team members. You will be responsible for the debt collection for multiple practices. The ideal candidate is proactive, self-sufficient, and has high attention to detail and organizational skills.

      Duties + Responsibilities

      • Drafting correspondence including demand letters
      • Drafting Civil Claims, Statement of Claims and Originating Applications
      • Serving Commencement Documents (via registered mail or arranging process servers)
      • Drafting Applications and Orders in foreclosure proceedings
      • Draft Caveats for condominium fee collections
      • Preparing Default Judgments (including pre-judgment interest calculations)
      • Preparing Writs of Enforcement, registering and renewing them
      • Performing basic and enforcement searches (bankruptcy, corporate, PPR, Equifax, and internet searches)
      • Instructing skip tracers for locates of current residents, employers and bank accounts (when required)
      • Working with debtors for repayment arrangement of judgments and overseeing those repayment arrangements and/or repayment of mortgage arrears or condominium fee arrears
      • Processing trust monies for clients
      • Preparing Bills of Costs (for debt collection and general litigation matters)
      • Preparing pre and post interest calculations
      • Preparing garnishee summons
      • Preparing Notices to Attend Questioning and Notices to Attend Questioning in Aid of Execution, including preparation of conduct money calculations (for debt collection and general litigation matters)
      • Drafting Affidavits of Service and supporting Affidavits for various court applications

      Qualifications + Skills

      • 5+ years of debt collection experience in a paralegal role
      • Excellent understanding of the Alberta Rules of Court
      • Strong knowledge of the Civil Enforcement Act, Personal Property Securities Act, Law of Property Act and Condominium Property Act

  • Resource Assistant - Calgary

    • Our Calgary office has an immediate opening for a Resource Assistant. Reporting directly to the Manager, Legal Support Services; this is a legal assistant role where you will work with a variety of our firm’s team members and will be responsible for the general support of multiple practices. The ideal candidate is proactive, self-sufficient, and has high attention to detail.

      Duties + Responsibilities

      • Use word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software to prepare correspondence and legal documents in support of corporate transactions.
      • Answer the telephone, schedule appointments, questionings, and meetings, greet visitors and handle administrative and business details.
      • Transcribe correspondence and legal documents from digital recordings or handwritten notes.
      • Manage lawyers’ diaries and update electronic calendar.
      • Review correspondence (including faxes and e-mail), co-ordinate the flow of information, update calendar and respond to routine inquiries.
      • Review and proofread outgoing documents to ensure they are correct and comply with legal procedures.
      • Access and use online legal resources.
      • Operate office equipment such as voice mail messaging systems, photocopying machines, and computer scanning equipment.
      • Handle routine accounting procedures:  billing, cheque deposits/requests, time entry, etc.
      • Perform general office duties as required.

      Qualifications + Skills

      • Over three years of hands-on experience as a legal assistant, with a strong focus on litigation, wills and estates, insurance, and corporate law.
      • Holds a recognized 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma, demonstrating a solid foundation in legal principles and practices.

  • Paralegal, Estate Litigation - Calgary or Edmonton

    • Our office is looking for a full-time paralegal in our Estate Litigation department. This role works with a variety of our firm’s team members and will be responsible for substantive file responsibilities within our estate and litigation practice.       Duties + Responsibilities

      • Draft Court Applications; Supporting Affidavits; Briefs; Notices; AGTA forms for lawyers’ final review
      • Compile Affidavits with exhibits
      • Attending to Affidavit signings and filings
      • Booking and diarizing Court dates, filing deadlines and return dates
      • Obtaining file details from client
      • Arranging to obtain medical records; medical reports; police reports and other third-party records required for litigation purposes
      • Summarizing relevant documents and preparing chronologies for Court proceedings
      • Preparing cost submissions and bills of costs
      • Reporting to clients on progress updates during course of litigation
      • Client contact for file status and concerns

      Qualifications + Skills

      • 5+ years of experience as a paralegal, preferably working in the wills + estates/litigation law practice area; General litigation experience an asset
      • Recognized 2-year Paralegal Diploma
      • Excellent ability to prioritize and understand urgency of tasks
      • Advanced computer skills
      • Strong analytical and accuracy skills and problem solving with minimal supervision
