  • Legal Assistant, Intellectual Property - Edmonton

    • Our Edmonton office is looking for an Assistant in our Intellectual Property department. Reporting directly to the Manager, Legal Support Services; this is a role where you will assist patent and trademark agents within our IP practice. The ideal candidate is proactive, self-sufficient, has high attention to detail, and holds top tier organizational skills.

      Duties + Responsibilities

      • Review incoming correspondence, coordinate the flow of information and prepare documents and reporting letters.
      • Respond to routine inquiries from clients.
      • Review and proofread outgoing documents to ensure they are correct and comply with legal procedures.
      • Use word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software to prepare correspondence and legal documents.
      • Access and use online patent office websites and databases.
      • Preparing engagement letters for new clients and coordinating with Compliance Department with respect to opening and closing of files.
      • Assist with Billing and Invoicing.
      • Other duties as assigned.

      Qualifications + Skills

      • 4+ years of experience preferably working in patents and trademarks.
      • Experience in patent and trademark prosecution preferred.
      • Recognized 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma/Patent Administrator Certificate or equivalent.
      • Extremely proficient with technology, database management, software, strong computer skills, and eagerness to learn new technologies.
      • Strong analytical and accuracy skills and problem solving with minimal supervision.

      Working Conditions

      • Hybrid working environment; minimum 3-days working in the Edmonton office.

  • Paralegal, Litigation Support - Calgary

    • Our Calgary office is looking for a paralegal in our Litigation Support Services Department. Reporting directly to the Litigation Support Services Manager, this is a role where you will work with a variety of practice groups within the firm. You will understand the importance of confidentiality in a professional setting and have exceptional attention to detail.       Duties + Responsibilities

      • Prepare Affidavits of Records including review for privilege and relevance
      • Review and unitization of client records
      • Review of transcripts and organize and track undertakings
      • Database administration and support for Litigation software
      • Manage and organize electronic evidence including importing and exporting records in and out of databases
      • Attendance at questionings and hearings to assist with displaying electronic materials as referred to
      • Assist with the preparation of briefs and compiling supporting documentation and caselaw
      • Prepare and assist with compiling and tracking expert packages
      • Preparation of Bill of Costs, Applications, Affidavits, and other court documents
      • Preparation of Court of Appeal materials
      • Communicate regularly with lawyers and staff in a professional manner
      • Participate in a collaborative team environment
      • Track and record time with billing targets
      • Preparation of Chronologies
      • Other tasks as assigned

      Qualifications + Skills

      • Minimum of 5-8 years of litigation experience
      • Experience working in Insurance Litigation is an asset
      • Working knowledge of litigation document management software
      • Advanced computer and technical skills
      • Advanced knowledge of litigation process at all levels of court
      • A high level of skill in both verbal and written communication
      • Detail oriented with strong organizational and time management skills
      • Ability to work to deadlines and maintain a high level of accuracy while working under pressure

  • Resource Assistant - Calgary

    • Our Calgary office has an immediate opening for a Resource Assistant. Reporting directly to the Manager, Legal Support Services; this is a legal assistant role where you will work with a variety of our firm’s team members and will be responsible for the general support of multiple practices. The ideal candidate is proactive, self-sufficient, and has high attention to detail.

      Duties + Responsibilities

      • Use word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software to prepare correspondence and legal documents in support of corporate transactions.
      • Answer the telephone, schedule appointments, questionings, and meetings, greet visitors and handle administrative and business details.
      • Transcribe correspondence and legal documents from digital recordings or handwritten notes.
      • Manage lawyers’ diaries and update electronic calendar.
      • Review correspondence (including faxes and e-mail), co-ordinate the flow of information, update calendar and respond to routine inquiries.
      • Review and proofread outgoing documents to ensure they are correct and comply with legal procedures.
      • Access and use online legal resources.
      • Operate office equipment such as voice mail messaging systems, photocopying machines, and computer scanning equipment.
      • Handle routine accounting procedures:  billing, cheque deposits/requests, time entry, etc.
      • Perform general office duties as required.

      Qualifications + Skills

      • Over three years of hands-on experience as a legal assistant, with a strong focus on litigation, wills and estates, insurance, and corporate law.
      • Holds a recognized 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma, demonstrating a solid foundation in legal principles and practices. 
      • Highly motivated and eager to expand knowledge and grow within the legal profession.
      • Proactive and self-sufficient, capable of taking the initiative to resolve issues independently while contributing effectively to team efforts.  
      • Possesses a consistently positive attitude, fostering a collaborative and encouraging workplace atmosphere.
