Legal Assistant, Litigation - Calgary

We have an opening for a Litigation Assistant to join our Dispute Resolution/Insurance Litigation Team. This position will be based out of the Calgary office. Reporting directly to the Manager, Legal Support Services; this is a role where you will work with a variety of our firm’s team members and will be responsible for the general administration of your lawyer’s practices. The ideal candidate is proactive, self-sufficient, and has high attention to detail and organizational skills.

Duties + Responsibilities
- Use word processing, spreadsheet, database, or presentation software to prepare correspondence and legal documents.
- Answer the telephone, schedule appointments, questionings, and meetings, greet visitors and manage administrative and business details.
- Transcribe correspondence and legal documents from digital recordings or handwritten notes.
- Manage lawyer’s diaries and update electronic calendar.
- Review correspondence (including faxes and e-mail), co-ordinate the flow of information, update calendar and respond to routine inquiries.
- Review and proofread outgoing documents to ensure they are correct and comply with legal procedures.
- Access and use online legal resources.
- Operate office equipment such as voice mail messaging systems, photocopying and computer scanning equipment.
- Manage routine accounting procedures: billing, cheque deposits/requests, time entry, etc.
- Assist with maintaining client relations.
- Perform general office duties as required.
Qualifications + Skills
- Minimum 5 years of experience preferably working in professional litigation practice area.
- Recognized 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma.
- Advanced computer skills.
- Strong analytical skills and problem solving with minimal supervision.

- Working in our corporate database to pull monthly reports for annual compliance purposes.
- Coordinating with lawyers and paralegals to determine which annual compliance packages need to be prepared.
- Reviewing corporate database, virtual minute books and information filed on CORES to verify details and ensure accuracy of corporate records.

Qualifications + Skills
- Legal Assistant/Paralegal Diploma or related education.
- Experience working in a law firm or a similar professional setting.

- Drafting correspondence including demand letters
- Drafting Civil Claims, Statement of Claims and Originating Applications
- Serving Commencement Documents (via registered mail or arranging process servers)
- Drafting Applications and Orders in foreclosure proceedings
- Drafting Caveats for condominium fee collections
- Preparing Default Judgments (including pre-judgment interest calculations)
- Preparing Writs of Enforcement, registering and renewing them
- Performing basic and enforcement searches (Land Titles, bankruptcy, corporate, PPR, Equifax, and internet searches)
- Instructing skip tracers for locates of current residents and employers
- Working with debtors for repayment arrangement of judgments and overseeing those repayment arrangements and/or repayment of mortgage arrears or condominium fee arrears
- Processing trust monies for clients
- Preparing Bills of Costs (for debt collection and general litigation matters)
- Preparing pre and post interest calculations
- Preparing garnishee summons
- Preparing Notices to Attend Questioning and Notices to Attend Questioning in Aid of Execution, including preparation of conduct money calculations (for debt collection and general litigation matters)
- Drafting Affidavits of Service and supporting Affidavits for various court applications
Qualifications + Skills
- 5+ years of debt collection experience in a paralegal role
- Recognized 2-year Legal Assistant or Paralegal Diploma
- Excellent understanding of the Alberta Rules of Court
- Strong knowledge of the Civil Enforcement Act, Personal Property Securities Act, Law of Property Act and Condominium Property Act
