J. Mark Jackson, KC

J. Mark Jackson, KC, is an Edmonton-based Partner whose practice focuses on health law litigation, hospital-physician relationships, postgraduate medical education and policy, governance and contract matters for health care organizations. He has extensive experience advising public and private sector clients in Alberta, British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories on a broad range of health care-related matters. Mark’s practice includes representing health care organizations facing complex medical malpractice claims and supporting medical leadership, medical advisory committees and Boards in their designated roles under medical staff Bylaws and Rules.

Mark regularly represents clients in medical malpractice litigation, hearings, inquests, appeals and fatality inquiries and provides advice on quality assurance processes and clinical issues, policies, standards of care and risk management. Known for his technical depth in health care and his skilled questioning, Mark has appeared before the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal, the Ontario Superior Court, the Supreme Court of Yukon, the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories, the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.

Mark also handles alternative dispute resolution proceedings, arbitrations, administrative hearings and mediations. He is involved in drafting and updating medical staff bylaws and rules, advising health care organizations on their relationships with medical staff and representing medical leadership in administrative hearings and before statutory appeal bodies. Mark acts as process counsel for medical advisory committees involved in disciplinary proceedings. Mark has worked closely with health care organizations, medical leadership and health care staff and has represented their interests in hearings, at trial and on appeal.

Committed to the education of future legal professionals, Mark frequently lectures on risk management matters, documentation and best practices, drawing on practical examples from actual litigation. Mark also lectures on medical malpractice at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Mark supports client education by carefully monitoring health care reform, medical malpractice law and health care legislation at the provincial and federal levels, offering advice and guidance to clients impacted by these developments. He provides clinical policy and practice opinions to health care clients to assist with operational issues.
