Team Member Fallback
Janika Sumaylo chose a career in law because of her passion for research, problem-solving, and advocacy. Prior to law school, she worked in planning and development for various municipalities across Alberta, where she gained experience addressing the complex challenges facing cities. She appeared before Subdivision and Development Appeal Board and the Municipal Planning Commission. These experiences gave her an insight of the laws that shape municipalities. She builds on this background to strengthen her advocacy skills.

While in law school, Janika received the John E Brownlee Memorial Prize in Local Government Law for attaining the highest grade in municipal law. She also volunteered as a caseworker for Student Legal Services, where she helped with criminal and human rights matters.

After completing her summer term at Field, Janika worked as a law student at the City of Calgary and a teaching assistant for Environmental Law at the University of Alberta.
