Derek Cranna, KC

Derek Cranna, KC, is an Edmonton-based Partner whose practice focuses on professional regulation and administrative law, with extensive experience in policing, labour relations and occupational health + safety matters.

Derek acts as counsel to Alberta professional regulatory organizations and municipal police services. He advises on the investigation, disposition and prosecution of professional disciplinary matters and serves as independent legal counsel to disciplinary tribunals. His experience includes professional discipline, administrative proceedings and regulatory decision-making.

Derek also represents leaders of police and peace officer services in professional discipline, civil litigation, employment and human rights matters. He has considerable experience acting as a Presenting Officer in police disciplinary proceedings before the Alberta Law Enforcement Review Board and the Alberta Court of Appeal.

In his post-secondary education practice, Derek advises major Alberta institutions on labour relations, human rights, policy and governance. He also provides policy advice and representation to government organizations and private entities on occupational health + safety matters.

Derek has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta, as well as the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.

Derek served on the Board of Directors of Legal Aid Alberta from 2011 to 2017 and as Board Chair from 2013 to 2015. He served as President of the Canadian Association of University Solicitors from 2020 to 2021 and previously served as a director of the University of Saskatchewan Alumni Association and the Edmonton Inner-City Housing Society. He was a member of Field Law’s Executive Committee from 2019 to 2026.

Derek was appointed Queen’s Counsel in Alberta in 2020, a designation now known as King’s Counsel.
