Dino McLaughlin has more than 30 years of experience representing institutional and individual clients in a broad range of civil and criminal matters. For the past several years, he has focused his practice on defending health care providers and institutions within the Alberta Health Services system in civil litigation involving class action claims, medical malpractice and other health law matters. He also advises local pension authorities, defends teachers facing numerous types criminal charges and represents individuals in personal injury and contract disputes.

Dino and his team are heavily focused on managing the class action claims that threaten to make a substantial impact on the Alberta health care system. They have played a significant role in defending the initial wave of claims, and with the unique exception of the elders class action – which has been one of the first common issues trials in Alberta – they have experienced great success in preventing the first attempts at class certification. This experience will prove even more beneficial as the plaintiff’s bar becomes increasingly sophisticated and focused on bringing these claims.

Dino is a frequent lecturer and teacher on civil litigation, health law, family law and criminal defense topics. He has been an instructor for numerous courses offered by the Legal Education Society of Alberta, taught Bar Admission Courses in Family Law and given lectures to various classes of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Education.

Dino has been involved with several charitable organizations in various capacities, including the Boyle McCauley Health Centre, the Bissell Centre, the Norwood Community Service Centre (Board Member) and the Edmonton Inner City Housing Society.

Dino’s depth and breadth of experience in complex litigation matters enables him to focus only on the relevant issues and avoid being distracted by the trivial details that often prevent a favorable and cost-efficient result. He excels at developing creative, practical strategies for resolving his clients’ disputes, particularly in cases where the emotions of the parties involved have reached a boiling point. According to Dino, “Although I’m always ready and willing to take contentious cases to trial when necessary, I also to try to create an open atmosphere of communication among the parties to resolve disputes amicably and avoid the cost and risk associated with prolonged litigation.” 

Outside the Office

Dino enjoys playing golf all over Edmonton and while on vacation abroad.
