Dale Cunningham is a litigation lawyer primarily focused on the settlement of Indian Residential Schools claims. His Aboriginal Law practice concentrates on helping Indigenous clients throughout Alberta and the Northwest Territories obtain appropriate compensation after suffering physical, sexual and psychological abuse at the hands of teachers, supervisors or other students while attending an Indian Residential School during their childhood.

For the convenience of his clients, Dale works out of the firm’s Edmonton and Yellowknife offices.

Dale is a regular speaker on a variety of Residential School issues and litigation trends at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and at various conferences and workshops sponsored by Indigenous organizations and governments.

Before starting his legal career, Dale was a sessional lecturer at MacEwan University, and he also taught courses at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Business and the Department of Sociology.

Value to Clients

Dale is passionate about playing a valuable role in helping abuse victims achieve some measure of closure to what are undoubtedly the most traumatic events in their lives. His small-town upbringing and calm demeanor help him relate to clients and put them at ease while reliving extremely difficult childhood memories. He excels at guiding abuse victims through every stage of a highly emotional and stressful litigation process, everything from initially making them comfortable discussing their abuse to fully preparing them to deliver strong testimony about their experiences before an Adjudicator at the Independent Assessment Process (IAP) hearing.

Outside the Office

Dale keenly reads history, political economy, cultural studies and historical fiction. He also enjoys hiking and the occasional golf game and tennis match.
