Field Law - Remote Working  

As the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to rise, we are writing to update you on the steps Field Law is taking to ensure the well-being of our employees, clients, and our community. We continue to monitor updates from Alberta Health Services (AHS) and NWT Health and Social Services. Their recommendations for the elimination of non-essential travel and increased social distancing appear to be critical factors in helping “flatten the curve” and slow the transmission of the virus.

Effective March 17, 2020, we are treating the daily commute to the office as non-essential travel and have instructed our employees to work remotely if they can do so until further notice.

We are not aware of any positive COVID-19 cases in our offices or among Firm members or their families, but are taking these actions to protect the Firm, and, as a matter of public health, to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

What This Means to Clients

Throughout all of this, we expect that our daily interactions with our clients will change very little. All employees continue to have access to their electronic mail, telephone messaging systems, electronic files, and everything else needed for a seamless transition to our remote environment. Additionally, we will continue to maintain a skeleton staff at all offices to assure that we promptly handle physical mail, deliveries, faxes and accounting matters. 

We want to assure you that we have the technology in place to support remote working by our employees so they can continue to provide you with the highest levels of service and security. Our employees are equipped for this scenario and we do not expect any disruption in the vital work we do for you.

FAQS

Our lawyers, paralegals, assistants, and other staff may be working from home. Other than that, it is business as usual for Field Law with only minor exceptions.

How quickly will I receive a response to my emails? 

You will continue to receive timely responses – there will be no disruption in this regard.

For a specific matter, what is the best way to communicate with my lawyer? 

Each of our lawyers remains fully connected. You can contact them at their Field Law email address or their office telephone line. If you can’t reach them, leave a message on their voicemail, which forwards to their email.

Will you still be able to attend court or deal with court filings? 

The Courts have each taken different steps to minimize risk. We are carefully monitoring the situation and your lawyer will provide you with an update on your specific matters.

How will we hold meetings with you? 

We will be able to conduct meetings virtually via conference call and will provide toll-free dial-in details as required.

Will I continue to get invoices and billing updates? 

Our goal is to provide seamless service to all clients of the Firm. Our Accounting team will be working remotely and will be able to issue invoices and provide information on a timely basis.

I need to deliver something to a lawyer, what is the process for that? 

We would encourage you to be in contact with the lawyer or their assistant directly either by phone or email. If the material can be delivered electronically, that is preferred. If not, we will do our best to arrange a courier to pick up and deliver materials as may be required.
