Field Law Announces Northwest Territories Winners of its 7th Annual Community Fund Program
$15,000 to be distributed between three organizations

YELLOWKNIFE (July 12, 2019) – Field Law, a western and northern regional business law firm, is pleased to announce the Northwest Territories grand prize winner and two additional recipients of its Community Fund Program (the Program).

The Kole Crook Fiddle Association is the 2019 Community Fund Program Grand Prize winner, with the additional awards granted to the Food First Foundation and the NWT Breast Health/Breast Cancer Action Group.

The Program has been supporting community initiatives for the past seven years; with more than $475,000 donated to date. In 2019, the Program will distribute another $75,000 to community initiatives, with $15,000 going to recipients in the Northwest Territories and $60,000 going to recipients in Northern and Southern Alberta.

Winners of the Program are selected by a community judging panel and public voting, with 24,337 votes cast in 2019. The Southern Alberta recipients were accounted last week and the Northern Alberta recipients will be announced at a local event in Edmonton later this month.

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES GRAND PRIZE WINNER:

Kole Crook Fiddle Association - Traditional Fiddling in our Communities Program - $10,000

The Kole Crook Fiddle Association teaches fiddle and fiddle dance in remote communities. They have brought fiddles to 15 communities to date. They host weekend fiddle workshops and teaching tours where fiddle instructors to travel to the communities and teach for approximately one week. The communities have developed practice times for youth and adults together, and students who previously learned to play the fiddle have asked to assist in teaching the next generation. The workshops help with learning and the development of self-confidence among the students, while the fiddle dances bring people out of their homes and encourages the communities to celebrate together.

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES FUNDING RECIPIENTS:

Food First Foundation - The Great Big Crunch NWT - $2,500

The Great Big Crunch will promote healthy snacking, the importance of enjoying food together and enhance students’ understanding of where their food comes from. The Great Big Crunch NWT is a special day, class, assembly, lunch hour, or even 5 minutes dedicated to apples and ending in a synchronized “crunch” to celebrate. Schools are encouraged to be creative…apple poetry, apple films, apple cooking…activities do not have to be elaborate – the intent is for students to enjoy an apple (or another healthy snack of the school’s choice) and for it to kick-start a conversation about food and healthy eating.

NWT Breast Health/Breast Cancer Action Group - Territorial Cancer Survivors’ Retreat for Women - $2,500

The Action Group will hold a two-and-a-half day Territorial Cancer Survivors’ Retreat for 20 women dealing with cancer in October 2019. The Retreat will take place in Yellowknife and include survivors from all regions of the NWT, with priority given to survivors from the smallest communities who may face the greatest isolation. The Survivors’ Retreat will provide psychosocial support and opportunities for sharing personal experiences with other survivors in a safe environment where participants are able to reflect on, explore and articulate their cancer journey through guided discussions and creative expression. In the long term, participants will experience more balanced/healthy lifestyle, reduced feelings of isolation, and be able to address cancer related psychosocial issues and gain hope for the future.
