Field Law Launches 2019 Community Fund Program
$75,000 Pledged to Support Community Initiatives in Alberta and Northwest Territories
April 1, 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (April 1, 2019) – Field Law, a western and northern regional law firm, today launches its seventh annual Field Law Community Fund Program (the Program). The Program supports non-charitable and charitable initiatives in Northern and Southern Alberta and in the Northwest Territories. In 2019, the Program will donate $75,000 across all three regions.
The Program allows for local individuals, groups or organizations (registered and non-registered), to apply for funding. Program winners can receive anywhere from $1,000 to the maximum award designated for their specific community. Funds will be allocated in varying amounts, with the maximum award set at $30,000 for each of the Northern and Southern Alberta regions, and $15,000 for the Northwest Territories. Finalists are chosen by a combination of public, online voting and deliberation by a Community Market Judging Panel.
The Program has supported 82 community initiatives with $475,000 in funding the past six years.
In 2018, the grand prize winner in Southern Alberta was The Brenda Strafford Society Community Room Improvements, a Calgary group that provides clients with resources such as counsellors, child care and support groups.
Northern Alberta, had two grand prize winners, the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta and NWT’s Minds in Motion program which provides physical and mental stimulation for people with early- to mid-stage Alzheimer’s disease and the Bissell Centre’s Community Kitchen, which will teach clients how to make a balanced meal.
The Délįnę Got’įnę Government’s Délįnę Summer Camp Program won in the Northwest Territories, providing at-risk youth with fun, exciting, technology-free and intellectually stimulating programs.
Among last year’s winners was the Soccer Without Boundaries Soccer Camp for Underserved Kids. “This funding allowed us to run our annual summer soccer camp which is attended by 120 children from the community and culminates in a final game against the Calgary Police Service, an important step in building relationships between those communities,” says Christa Holten of the Group. “Thanks to support from the Program, we can provide opportunities for children to belong in a new environment, for youth to see pathways to contribute to the community and for parents to learn how to connect to supportive networks.”
Additional stories of successful initiatives funded by the Program can be found on the newly launched Impact page.
“The Community Fund Program winners inspire our communities,” says Doreen Saunderson, Firm Managing Partner at Field Law. “We can’t wait to see and vote on this year’s community-benefiting, pay-it-forward ideas.”
“Last year, Field Law saw record-breaking engagement on its community platforms and engagement continues to grow every year demonstrating the support many of these groups need to continue the compassionate and critically relevant work they do,” added Doreen.
