Pay it Forward for the Planet

In 2021 the Edmonton Valley Zoo noticed a 91% decrease in the number of booked programs, highlighting significant barriers to access for schools.

In response, Pay it Forward was created to reduce the financial and logistical challenge while ensuring students could still access hands on, curriculum focused learning.

By removing the financial barriers we are ensuring a more equitable access to hands-on STEAM education – giving students the chance to learn through real-world experiences.

Our Goal is to send 200 classes each school year, between September and April.

Because of the Field Law Community Fund Program, 93 students were able to engage in meaningful STEAM education in a way that would not have been possible due to financial barriers. Because of you, it was possible for all students to participate equally, fostering curiosity, inclusion, and a lasting connection to learning.

St Bernadette Grade 1 - “Garbage Audit”

Students investigated how different types of litter found in their community biodegrade and what impact waste has on the environment. Inspired by their learning, students pledged to care for their neighbourhood by cleaning it up together over four weeks.

St Alphonsus AM/PM Kindergarten - "Dinosaur Woods"

Students explored the importance of habitats by reading “The Dinosaur Woods” and discussing why animals—and

people—need healthy environments to survive.  Students created, disrupted, and rebuilt an animal habitat, students discovered that different living things have different needs and that protecting environments is essential for meeting those needs.

Belmead Grade 1 - "Energy and Movement of Living Things"

Students researched where animals live, what they eat, how they move, and how they survive in different environments.
Experiencing animals firsthand helped students better understand movement, energy use, seasonal adaptations such as migration and hibernation, and the ways animals interact with their surroundings through real-world observation and hands-on learning.
