Abbott Care Closet
We created the Care Closet at Abbott School to support students and families facing economic challenges by providing discreet access to essential hygiene and basic supplies. With support from the Field Law Community Fund Program, we stocked it with items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, socks, hair supplies, and travel-sized toiletries, along with a small selection of emergency food and school supplies. By January 2025, it was fully operational, giving staff a practical and compassionate way to respond when students or families needed support.
Over the past year, the Care Closet has made a real difference in people’s lives. One unhoused family came to the school after their youngest child’s winter jacket zipper broke; we were able to provide a warm jacket that fit perfectly, along with essential hygiene items. Another family lost their home in an apartment fire and had to stay in a hotel for several weeks; we were able to provide them with laundry soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair supplies, and deodorant. These moments illustrate the Care Closet’s impact: helping students and families feel supported, confident, and included. Its success has also inspired community members to donate and request wish lists, helping ensure the Care Closet can continue serving students long term. We are deeply grateful to the Field Law Community Fund Program for helping us create a resource rooted in dignity, care, and belonging.
