Calgary Newcomers Guide (CNG)

The Idea

Weekend Gardening Workshop is a hands-on, community-based initiative designed to empower newcomer families in Calgary through environmental education, sustainable gardening skills, and social connection. Hosted on weekends at partnering community centres, the program offers guided gardening sessions, composting demonstrations, and seasonal planting activities. Participants learn how to grow food, care for green spaces, and build relationships across cultures—all while contributing to a more climate-resilient city.

Who Will Benefit?

This program primarily benefits newcomer families—especially youth and parents—who are seeking opportunities to connect with their community, learn practical skills, and engage in environmental stewardship. Many participants face barriers to accessing green spaces and outdoor education. By partnering with local community centres, we provide a welcoming, inclusive space where families can grow together—literally and figuratively. We anticipate engaging 80–100 participants over the course of the season.
