Volunteer Ready: Pathways to Community Involvement for Newcomers

The Idea
Many newcomers want to volunteer and contribute to their communities, but language barriers, unfamiliarity with Canadian volunteer culture, and limited knowledge of available opportunities can make participation challenging.
For several years, CCI-LEX has operated a Volunteerism for Newcomers program that connects newcomers to supported group volunteer activities throughout Edmonton. Participants volunteer with local charities, community organizations, festivals, and events while building confidence, practicing English, expanding social networks, and developing a stronger sense of belonging. More than 100 newcomers participate annually, contributing hundreds of volunteer hours that support local organizations and community initiatives.
CCI-LEX is proposing a new enhancement to this successful program: Volunteer Ready: Pathways to Community Involvement.
This initiative will help newcomers move beyond participation in CCI-LEX-led volunteer activities and develop the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to become long-term volunteers and active community contributors.
The initiative includes four new components:
Volunteer Ready Orientation
A structured introduction to volunteering in Canada, including expectations, responsibilities, and the benefits of community involvement.
Volunteer Opportunity Navigation
Support to identify volunteer opportunities, complete applications, and connect with organizations independently.
Volunteer English Resource Toolkits
Development of simple language resources linked to volunteer activities, including key vocabulary and communication supports.
Newcomer Ambassador Opportunities
Creation of structured volunteer roles within CCI-LEX that allow participants to welcome new learners, assist with events, share experiences, and encourage community involvement.
Through these enhancements, newcomers will gain practical skills, stronger social connections, increased confidence, and greater independence in accessing volunteer opportunities. The project will help participants move from supported volunteers to active community contributors.
Who Will Benefit?
The primary beneficiaries will be approximately 120 newcomers participating in CCI-LEX programs during 2027.
Participants include adult permanent residents, refugees, work permit holders, and citizens who often face barriers to community participation due to language limitations, unfamiliarity with Canadian volunteer culture, and limited social networks.
CCI-LEX serves more than 1,200 learners annually from over 80 countries, with many having arrived in Canada within the past five years. More than 75% of learners have beginner or low-intermediate English proficiency, making supported opportunities to connect, practice English, and engage in community life especially important. Many are building new social networks while navigating employment, education, and life in a new country.
Through this project, participants will gain increased confidence, stronger social connections, greater understanding of volunteer opportunities, and practical experience contributing to their communities.
The project will also benefit local non-profit organizations and community groups by increasing volunteer participation and strengthening connections between newcomers and the broader Edmonton community.
