The Idea

What would happen if a neighbourhood started investing in the ideas already living inside its people?

In Ogden, we have discovered that our community is full of people with ideas—small businesses they would love to start, creative projects they want to try, ways they could serve their neighbours, and dreams they have carried for years. Often, what is missing isn't potential. It's someone believing in the idea, helping them take the first steps, and providing a small amount of funding to get started.

The Ogden Dream Fund will provide micro-grants to local residents to turn their ideas into action.

Through Bravely Connected Communities' Dream Academy, residents are invited to discover their strengths, develop an idea, create a simple plan and budget, and receive coaching and mentorship. Dream Academy is designed to be accessible to everyday people, including those who may not see themselves as entrepreneurs or community leaders.

Participants will then have the opportunity to present their ideas at a community Pitch Night, where approximately $10,000 in micro-grants will be awarded to help selected residents take their next step. Grants will range from approximately $500–$2,000 depending on what each idea needs.

But this isn't simply a pitch competition.

The goal is to create a neighbourhood culture where people move from receiving to contributing, from dreaming to doing, and eventually from being supported to supporting someone else.

A resident might use a micro-grant to test a food business at the Ogden Market. A young person might launch a creative project. Someone might develop a service that meets a need they see in the neighbourhood. Another resident might create an experience that brings people together.

Recipients won't receive funding and be left on their own. Bravely Connected Communities will continue providing coaching, mentorship, community connections and opportunities to test and grow their ideas.

Our goal is to fund approximately 10 dreams, but the larger vision is to demonstrate what can happen when a community recognizes that some of its greatest assets are already present in the creativity, strengths and ideas of the people who live there.

We don't just want to fund projects.

We want to create evidence that when you invest in people, people invest back into their community.

Who Will Benefit?

The Ogden Dream Fund will directly benefit residents of Ogden and surrounding southeast Calgary communities who have ideas, strengths and potential, but may lack the financial resources, connections or confidence to take the first step.

We especially want to create opportunities for people who are often overlooked by traditional funding or entrepreneurship pathways: lower-income residents, youth, newcomers, people receiving income supports, aspiring entrepreneurs, creatives, and everyday neighbours with a great idea but limited access to capital or professional networks.

Through Dream Academy, approximately 30–50 residents will have the opportunity to develop their ideas, identify their strengths, learn practical skills, build confidence and receive coaching and mentorship. From this group, approximately 10 individuals or teams will receive micro-grants of $500–$2,000 to move their ideas from planning into action.

However, we believe the greatest impact will extend far beyond the people receiving grants.

When a neighbour starts a small food business, local residents become customers. When a young person launches a creative project, other youth see what is possible. When someone creates a community event, neighbours who may have felt isolated find connection. When a resident develops a service to meet a local need, the entire neighbourhood benefits.

We have seen this happen through our work in Ogden. When people are given meaningful opportunities to contribute, they begin to see themselves differently. Someone who initially comes looking for support can become a vendor, volunteer, entrepreneur, mentor or community leader.

That is the deeper purpose of the Ogden Dream Fund.

We don't want residents to simply be recipients of community programs. We want them to discover that they have something valuable to contribute to their community.

The direct beneficiaries may be 30–50 Dream Academy participants and approximately 10 micro-grant recipients, but the ripple effect has the potential to reach hundreds of neighbours through the businesses, projects, services, events and relationships they create.

Ultimately, this idea benefits the whole neighbourhood by shifting the question from “What do people in our community need?” to “What strengths, ideas and possibilities already exist here—and how can we help release them?”
