The Idea

The HiVE Youth Leadership Program is a new community initiative designed to develop confident, capable, and connected young leaders in southwest Edmonton. Created by the Chappelle Gardens Residents Association, The HiVE engages youth ages 12 to 17 in a year-long experience that combines leadership training, mentorship, and hands-on community service.

Rooted in the values of Serve Your Community, Work as a Team, Act with Integrity, Rise to the Challenge, and Make an Impact, The HiVE helps participants discover their strengths while contributing meaningfully to the place they live. Each month, youth attend interactive workshops focused on leadership, communication, problem solving, and civic engagement. Between sessions, they apply their learning by volunteering at local events, leading kindness initiatives, and organizing small community projects that make a visible difference.

The 2025 pilot will include 15 youth participants representing diverse backgrounds and experiences. The program ensures full accessibility with no fees to participate, and all materials and supplies are provided so that every young person can engage fully regardless of financial circumstances. Mentors from the community guide participants, encouraging them to take initiative, work collaboratively, and lead with empathy.

Funding from Field Law will fully cover the program’s first year of implementation. The $10,000 request will provide leadership kits, guest speaker honorariums, branded shirts and lanyards to build group identity, supplies for volunteer projects, and recognition materials for participants. This support will remove barriers to participation and set the foundation for future cohorts.

The HiVE fills a vital gap in a growing community of more than 2,800 households by offering youth a space to learn, lead, and belong. Beyond individual growth, it strengthens community connection by creating a bridge between youth and residents through acts of service, collaboration, and shared purpose.

Over time, The HiVE will establish a lasting network of young changemakers who embody the values of service, teamwork, integrity, resilience, and impact, building a legacy of leadership that continues to make the community buzz for years to come.

Who Will Benefit?

The HiVE Youth Leadership Program will directly benefit 15 young people ages 12 to 17 who live in the Chappelle Gardens community and surrounding southwest Edmonton area. These youth will gain hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, and community service through monthly workshops and volunteer projects. Many participants will be taking on leadership roles for the first time, so the program provides a safe and supportive environment to help them build confidence and discover their strengths.

Each participant will receive personal mentorship, opportunities to lead real projects, and the chance to connect with peers who share a desire to make a difference. The experience will help them develop essential life skills such as communication, problem solving, and responsibility while also learning the value of service and collaboration. These skills extend beyond the program and into school, family, and future employment, creating lasting personal and professional growth.

Parents and families will also benefit as their children gain structure, direction, and positive role models within their own neighborhood. The program helps parents feel proud and engaged in their child’s community involvement and gives them a sense of connection to local initiatives.

The wider Chappelle Gardens community will experience a direct benefit as well. With more than 2,800 households, there is an ongoing need for volunteers and engaged residents to help at community events and projects. The HiVE will strengthen the local volunteer network by preparing youth to contribute meaningfully to these activities. Their involvement will bring fresh energy, creativity, and enthusiasm to events that unite residents of all ages.

Local partners, including small businesses, schools, and community organizations, will benefit through opportunities to collaborate with youth who are eager to serve and learn. These partnerships help build mutual respect and understanding between generations while promoting a shared sense of ownership over the well-being of the community.

In the long term, the HiVE will benefit the entire community by developing a sustainable cycle of leadership and mentorship. As participants grow into young adults, they can return as mentors for future cohorts, ensuring the spirit of service and teamwork continues to thrive. The result is a stronger, more connected, and resilient community where everyone has a role in making a positive impact.
