Mental Health Without Barriers: The Community Connection Project - Bringing Mental Health Support Closer to Home
Details
Northern Alberta
The Idea
CMHA Central Alberta is seeking $15,000 through the Field Law Community Fund to expand its 2026 Connection Caravan project in 2027, bringing mental health information and community resources to more people across Central Alberta.
The Connection Caravan is built on the belief that meaningful connections can improve mental health and that everyone should know where to turn for support. Individuals and families may face barriers such as stigma, isolation, transportation challenges or limited awareness of available services, particularly in rural communities.
Our goal is to bring mental health resources directly to people, rather than expecting them to find their way to us.
In 2027, CMHA will expand outreach at community events, libraries, community centres, workplaces and rural gatherings. Activities will include sharing mental health education, promoting CMHA programs, distributing resources and helping residents navigate available supports.
A key enhancement will be developing a Central Alberta Mental Health Resource Toolkit featuring local services, referral pathways and practical information for individuals, families and community organizations. CMHA will also strengthen community partnerships and, where feasible, provide educational sessions to help staff and volunteers connect people with appropriate resources.
The project will prioritize rural and underserved communities, working with local partners to identify opportunities to reach people who may otherwise experience barriers to accessing mental health information.
Proposed targets include delivering 10–12 outreach opportunities, reaching at least 1,000 community members, engaging six or more community partners and developing reusable resource materials. Progress will be measured through outreach records, resource distribution and partner feedback.
Field Law's $15,000 contribution will support outreach materials, resource development, educational resources, community engagement supplies, regional travel and project evaluation.
By building on the 2026 initiative, Connection Caravan 2027 will extend its reach, strengthen community connections and help more people access the information and resources they need. The project will create a lasting ripple effect by equipping community partners to share mental health information beyond individual outreach events, helping build a more informed, connected and compassionate Central Alberta.
Who Will Benefit?
Connection Caravan 2027 will benefit individuals and families throughout Central Alberta by making mental health information, community resources and pathways to support more accessible.
The project will particularly benefit people who are unsure where to find mental health support, have limited awareness of existing services, experience isolation or face barriers to accessing traditional supports. Rural residents may benefit from increased opportunities to connect with resources closer to home. The initiative will also support family members, friends, colleagues and neighbours who want to help someone experiencing mental health challenges but may not know where to begin.
Through community outreach at local events, libraries, community centres, workplaces and rural gatherings, CMHA Central Alberta will create welcoming opportunities for people to learn about mental health, discover available services and identify appropriate next steps. By bringing resources directly into familiar community settings, the project aims to reduce stigma, increase awareness and make asking for help feel more approachable.
Community organizations, staff and volunteers will also benefit from improved knowledge of local services, practical mental health resource materials and stronger connections with CMHA Central Alberta. The development of a reusable Central Alberta Mental Health Resource Toolkit will help participating organizations share reliable information and guide individuals toward appropriate supports beyond the initial outreach activities.
The broader community will benefit from stronger partnerships, improved mental health literacy and increased awareness of available resources. By helping people recognize where to turn for support and equipping community partners to share that knowledge, Connection Caravan 2027 will create a ripple effect that extends beyond individual interactions.
Ultimately, the project aims to help more Central Alberta residents feel informed, connected and empowered to take the next step toward mental health support, while strengthening the community's collective ability to respond with understanding and compassion.
