The Idea

Infinite Abilities Assistance Dogs (IAAD) is a new Calgary-based registered charity dedicated to empowering Albertans with disabilities through the placement of professionally trained assistance dogs.

The IAAD Training Program Project supports the development and training of assistance dogs that provide mobility, hearing, diabetic alert, and facility-based support for Albertans living with disabilities. Funding will support the acquisition and training of puppies, veterinary care, nutrition, and specialized training resources required to prepare dogs for service.

During the project, IAAD will support up to 20 dogs in various stages of training, with several advancing to specialized task training and future placement with Albertans who rely on assistance dogs for independence and safety.

The program also engages volunteers through structured training classes, mentorship, and community field training that prepares dogs for real-world environments while strengthening public awareness of accessibility and inclusion.

Who Will Benefit?

This project will directly and indirectly benefit between 100 and 500 people, including individuals living with disabilities, their families, volunteers, and community partners. Since launching IAAD, the organization has already received 81 inquiries from individuals seeking an assistance dog, demonstrating strong demand for these services in Alberta.

In addition to direct client support, IAAD engages volunteers and the broader community through training partnerships and outreach at senior residences, first responder organizations, schools, and public events. These activities provide essential real-world training opportunities for dogs while increasing community awareness of accessibility and invisible disabilities.

By combining client support, volunteer engagement, and public education, IAAD’s impact extends beyond individual placements to strengthen community inclusion and accessibility across Alberta.

In November 2025, IAAD was approved as a Qualified Service Dog Provider by the Government of Alberta, confirming that the organization’s training standards and program practices meet provincial requirements.

IAAD has developed a strategic business plan to guide responsible program growth and increase the number of assistance dogs available to Albertans living with disabilities. Several dogs are now progressing through training and developing specialized task skills required for service work.
