The Idea

We propose a 5-day overnight leadership camp designed to equip participants with the skills, certification, and hands-on experience needed to deliver high-quality recreational programming that is safe, inclusive, and purpose-driven. Through immersive training and mentorship, the camp fosters both confidence and competence in emerging leaders. Post-camp support and follow-up resources will ensure continued development, helping participants thrive in their leadership roles and positively impact their communities.

Camp Objectives:

  • Develop Confident and Competent Leaders: Train youth and community leaders from the MRA region to deliver high-quality recreation, sport, and physical activity programs that are safe, inclusive, and purposeful.

  • Build Community Capacity: Strengthen local capacity by empowering communities to become more self-sufficient in providing programming and nurturing the next generation of youth leaders.

  • Provide Certification and Skill Development: Offer hands-on training in program planning and facilitate recreation leadership certification to enhance participants' qualifications and readiness. Trainings like High Five: Principles of Healthy Child Development, Recreation for Mental Health, NCCP: Fundamental Movements Skills, Water Smart and Swim to Survive, Northern and Dene Games (cultural games and teachings).

  • Promote Physical Literacy: Increase participants' understanding of physical literacy and the lifelong benefits of physical activity.

  • Support Local Programming: Provide guidance, funding, and resources to help participants design, deliver, and evaluate summer camps and programs that integrate culture, recreation, sport, and education.

  • Improve Community Health Outcomes: Contribute to healthier communities through the delivery of engaging, high-quality recreational programming.
