The Idea

The Northwest Territories SPCA is seeking funding to establish the NWT Community Emergency Veterinary Care & Pet Retention Program, a financial assistance program designed to help eligible NWT pet owners access necessary veterinary care when their pets experience an unexpected illness or injury.

For many families, an unexpected veterinary expense can create a significant financial barrier to treatment. In the Northwest Territories, this challenge is compounded by limited veterinary services and, for residents of smaller and remote communities, additional transportation and logistical costs.

The program will provide financial assistance toward medically necessary veterinary treatment, helping prevent unnecessary suffering, reduce financially driven surrenders, and keep pets safely with their families whenever possible.

Who Will Benefit?

The program will be available to eligible NWT residents experiencing financial hardship whose pets require necessary veterinary treatment for an unexpected illness or injury.

Priority may be given to:

  • Low-income households

  • Seniors

  • Individuals experiencing financial hardship

  • Families facing an unexpected financial crisis

  • Residents of communities with limited veterinary services

  • Situations where assistance may prevent surrender of the animal

Clear eligibility criteria will be established to ensure funding is distributed fairly and equitably.
