Kind Neighbour YYC: Make Kindness Contagious

The Idea
Imagine if every Calgarian had an easy way to make their community a little kinder.
Not through grand gestures or formal volunteering, but through small, everyday acts that help people feel noticed, connected, and supported. A neighbour shovelling a walkway. Someone stopping for a conversation. Picking up groceries. Leaving a handwritten note. Checking in on someone.
For older adults, these moments can mean so much. Changes in mobility, transportation, or social networks can make staying connected harder. A friendly neighbour or helping hand can create a sense of belonging and remind a senior that someone cares and is nearby.
Kind Neighbour YYC will expand Calgary Seniors' Kind Neighbour program into a community-wide campaign that encourages Calgarians to connect with and support older adults through everyday kindness.
Many people want to help but don't know how. They may worry about overstepping, wonder what would be useful, or think they need to become a formal volunteer.
Kind Neighbour creates a bridge.
With Field Law's support, Calgary Seniors will develop fun, practical tools that make kindness easier to offer, recognize, and share. A short awareness video will feature real seniors and neighbours. "I ❤️ My Community" stickers will celebrate neighbourhood pride, while Kindness Grams will recognize people making a difference. Connection Cards will help neighbours offer specific support.
Wallet-sized Kindness Cards, a rolling 12-month calendar, a "What's Your Kindness Superpower?" quiz, and a Kind Neighbour Challenge will inspire people to put kindness into action.
The goal isn't to turn everyone into a volunteer. It's to help people recognize that they already have something to give and create more opportunities for seniors to experience connection and belonging.
You can stop for five minutes. Shovel a walkway. Pick up groceries. Send a card. Check in. Simply say hello.
Strong communities aren't built by a few people doing big things. They're built by many people doing small things for one another.
There are Kind Neighbours all over Calgary. Let's make them easier to find.
Who Will Benefit?
The primary beneficiaries of Kind Neighbour YYC are older adults living in Calgary, particularly seniors who may experience social isolation, reduced mobility, changes in their support networks, or barriers to participating in community life.
As people age, everyday connections can become less frequent. A neighbour who stops for a conversation, offers to pick up groceries, shovels a walkway, or simply checks in can make a meaningful difference. These small acts can help seniors feel connected, valued, and supported while strengthening their sense of belonging in their own neighbourhood.
Kind Neighbour YYC will also benefitCalgarians who want to help but may not see themselves as volunteers. Many people are willing to support an older neighbour but are unsure how to offer help appropriately, what they can do, or how to take that first step. The campaign will provide simple, low-barrier ways for people to turn their willingness to help into meaningful action.
The project will create opportunities for connection between seniors and the broader community, helping build relationships that can extend beyond a single act of kindness. This is particularly important for older adults who may have fewer opportunities for spontaneous social interaction or who are at risk of becoming disconnected from their community.
The campaign will also benefitneighbourhoods across Calgary by encouraging a culture where people notice one another, look out for older adults, and feel empowered to contribute in ways that fit their lives.
Importantly, Kind Neighbour YYC is not about expecting neighbours to become caregivers or formal volunteers. It is about making everyday neighbourliness easier and more intentional.
The ultimate benefit is simple: more seniors feeling seen, connected, and part of their community, and more Calgarians recognizing that they have the ability to make a difference.
