The Idea

Our idea is to build a community greenhouse at the YVC Airdrie Community Garden to extend the growing season, increase food security, and provide year-round educational opportunities for youth and community members. This greenhouse will serve as a hub for hands-on learning, environmental stewardship, and intergenerational collaboration.

The greenhouse will be a multi-purpose space designed to grow fresh produce throughout the year, including during Alberta’s colder months. It will support seedlings for the outdoor garden in spring and summer, and allow for winter crops and indoor gardening programs during the off-season. This will significantly increase the garden’s productivity and reduce reliance on external food sources.

Youth volunteers will be involved in every stage of the project—from planning and construction to planting, harvesting, and distributing produce. They will gain valuable skills in sustainable agriculture, teamwork, and leadership. The greenhouse will also host workshops on composting, seed saving, climate change, and healthy eating, fostering environmental awareness and life skills.

The produce grown will support local food banks, community kitchens, and families in need, aligning with our mission to empower youth to make a difference in their communities. The greenhouse will also be a space for seniors and other community members to share knowledge, mentor youth, and build social connections.

This project is not just about growing food—it’s about growing community, resilience, and opportunity. With this greenhouse, we can cultivate a more sustainable and compassionate future, one seed at a time.

Who Will Benefit?

The community greenhouse will benefit a wide range of individuals and groups across Airdrie, with a particular focus on youth, families, and vulnerable populations.

1. Youth Volunteers and Students:
Youth are at the heart of this initiative. They will gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and food systems. Through planting, harvesting, and maintaining the greenhouse, youth will develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. The greenhouse will also serve as an outdoor classroom for local schools and youth programs, offering experiential learning opportunities in science, nutrition, and climate action.

2. Families and Individuals Facing Food Insecurity:
The greenhouse will significantly increase the volume and variety of fresh produce available for donation to local food banks, community kitchens, and meal programs. This will directly benefit families and individuals experiencing food insecurity, ensuring access to nutritious, locally grown food year-round.

3. Seniors and Intergenerational Participants:
The project will create opportunities for seniors to engage with youth through mentorship and shared gardening activities. This intergenerational exchange fosters community connection, reduces social isolation, and allows for the transfer of valuable knowledge and life experience.

4. Community Organizations and Partners:
Local nonprofits, schools, and service agencies will benefit from the greenhouse as a shared resource. It will support collaborative programming, such as nutrition education, mental wellness workshops, and cultural food-growing initiatives. These partnerships will strengthen community networks and amplify the impact of the project.

5. The Broader Community and Environment:
By promoting sustainable practices such as composting, water conservation, and organic gardening, the greenhouse will contribute to environmental awareness and climate resilience. It will serve as a visible symbol of community collaboration and a model for other neighborhoods seeking to build local food systems.

In essence, this greenhouse is more than a structure—it is a catalyst for community empowerment, education, and resilience. It will benefit current and future generations by cultivating a healthier, more connected, and more sustainable Airdrie.
