Every Kid Belongs: Expanding Langdon Summer Camps
Details
Southern Alberta
The Idea
LCA has secured $25,000 through the Government of Alberta’s Every Kid Can Play Program (SPAR) to help establish the program. This important
investment supports core delivery costs such as staffing, training, some equipment and program supplies. The camps will run for four weeks during
July and August, Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., creating up to 64 participant spaces in the program’s first year.
Our Field Law Community Fund idea is to build on that foundation and help ensure that every child has the opportunity to participate and have a great
summer camp experience, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances.
Field Law funding would be used for costs not funded through SPAR, with a strong focus on removing barriers and enriching the experience for
participating children.
Additional subsidies would help families for whom even an affordable registration fee can be difficult, particularly households registering more than
one child. We want financial assistance to be approachable and confidential so families can ask for support without facing a complicated process.
Funding would also allow us to provide healthy snacks and food during camp. This helps reduce another daily expense for families while ensuring
children have access to food to keep them energized during active days.
We could also bring special experiences directly to Langdon through visiting instructors, presenters, workshops and special activity days. Rural
children often have to travel outside their community to access these opportunities; we want to bring some of those experiences to them.
Additional funding would also help us respond to individual accessibility or inclusion needs so that more children can fully participate.
Our vision is bigger than simply running a summer camp. We want to establish a program where children can be active, try something new, build
friendships, gain confidence and feel that they belong, while giving families an affordable summer option close to home.
With SPAR helping us build the foundation and Field Law helping us expand access and opportunity, we can create a program that local families can
rely on, and that can continue growing for years to come.
Who Will Benefit?
Our 2027 summer camp program will directly benefit up to 64 children ages 6–12 from Langdon and surrounding communities, but the impact extends well beyond the children registered for camp.
Children will benefit from an affordable, local summer program where they can be active, build friendships, try new activities and feel a sense of belonging. Funding will also help us provide healthy snacks and food and bring special instructors, presenters and experiences directly to Langdon, giving children opportunities they may not otherwise have access to locally.
Families experiencing financial barriers will be a key beneficiary, helping ensure that household income does not determine whether a child gets to participate. Reduced registration costs, along with food being provided during camp, can help ease some of the financial pressure associated with summer activities.
Parents and caregivers also benefit. Affordable programming close to home provides families with a safe and positive place for their children during the summer while reducing the cost, travel time and scheduling challenges associated with accessing programs outside the community. This can be particularly valuable for working parents, caregivers and households with multiple children.
The benefits also reach siblings, extended families and the broader community. When children participate locally, families build relationships with one another, children develop friendships within their own community, and parents and caregivers become more connected to other local families.
The first 64 campers are just the beginning. By removing financial barriers and creating meaningful experiences close to home, this project can have a ripple effect that reaches families, caregivers and the wider Langdon community. It helps create a community where children feel included, families feel supported and more people have the opportunity to participate and belong.
