The Idea

We will deliver 15 fully sponsored, professional live music concerts to low-income, publicly funded continuing care and supportive living residences across Northern Alberta, free of charge to the facilities and their residents.

Live music has a profound ability to heal, comfort, and re-energize, yet the individuals who need it most—isolated seniors, palliative patients, and adults living with cognitive decline or severe mobility barriers—are often entirely cut off from the cultural life of their communities. Many publicly funded care facilities operate on stretched budgets that leave zero discretionary funding for high-quality artistic programming. Our initiative bridges this gap by bringing exceptional, intimate performances directly into communal living rooms, dining spaces, and care environments.

We work with over 150 professional, local artists across the province so that these concerts span a variety of genres. Audiences will experience everything from chamber music, acoustic folk, jazz standards, and golden-era classics to world music, roots, and celebrated popular melodies. Each 45-minute performance is tailored to care settings: artists combine polished musicianship with warm storytelling, and genuine personal conversation with residents. This musical variety sparks vivid memories, stimulates cognitive function, and creates shared moments of celebration for people experiencing profound daily isolation.

Who Will Benefit?

This initiative directly touches four key groups:

1. Vulnerable, Low-Income Care Residents (500+ Direct Beneficiaries) The primary beneficiaries are older adults, palliative patients, and individuals living with advanced dementia, cognitive decline, or complex physical disabilities residing in publicly funded continuing care and supportive living environments. Residents in these publicly subsidized facilities often face compounded barriers: severe mobility restrictions that prevent travel to concert halls, fixed or low incomes that make ticketed performances inaccessible, and cognitive conditions that make public arts venues overwhelming.

2. Frontline Healthcare Staff and Care Teams (150+ Secondary Beneficiaries) Health care aides, nurses, recreational therapists, and support staff in underfunded care settings work under persistent emotional and physical strain. Hosting high-caliber live music transforms communal institutional spaces into calm, joyful environments. Staff report that musical engagement lowers resident anxiety for hours following a concert, easing day-to-day transitions, de-escalating agitation, and fostering shared, human moments between caregivers and residents that go beyond clinical tasks.

3. Visiting Families and Loved Ones (100+ Beneficiaries) Visiting a loved one navigating dementia or palliative decline can be emotionally heartbreaking and fraught with communication strain. These intimate performances provide families with a meaningful, pressure-free activity to share together.

4. Professional Northern Alberta Artists (15–30 Local Musicians) Every dollar allocated toward performance honorariums directly supports professional local musicians across genres including folk, jazz, classical, and roots. We pay all our musicians union wages negotiated under agreements with the Canadian Federation of Musicians Local 390 along with pension benefits.
