Lavinia McElwee is a paralegal in the Intellectual Property + Technology Group and has been working in the area of intellectual property since 2006. Lavinia primarily works in the realm of patents, industrial designs and copyrights and has extensive experience in trademarks.

Prior to joining the Field Law, Lavinia began her career in intellectual property working for a leading firm in New Zealand. Pursuing her passion for intellectual property, she moved on to work as an in-house patent paralegal working with cutting edge technology in the implantable hearing solutions space for world renowned company, Cochlear Limited. She has gained valuable experience in managing large international intellectual property portfolios and in 2011, moved to Calgary to work as a trademark paralegal for a global top 5 law firm for several years before joining Field Law.

In addition to obtaining her Legal Executive Diploma from the New Zealand Law Society, Lavinia has completed the following:

  • Understanding Trademarks, IPIC, 2012
  • US Patent Administration: A Foundation for Success, PRG Institute of Patent and Trademark Paralegals, 2017
  • Understanding Patents, IPIC, 2018

Outside the Office

Born and raised in New Zealand, Lavinia grew up playing and watching sports with her family. She enjoys rugby, rugby league and netball and is an avid snowboarder. Lavinia enjoys spending time in the mountains with her family. If she is not in the office, she is usually in Fernie, BC enjoying the mountain life or down at the local rugby club.
