Jay Smith-Hayward is an insurance lawyer in our Edmonton office. She has worked in civil litigation and family law, which has meant experience with a wide variety of files. She has experience in insurance, employment, human rights, construction, administrative, corporate commercial and family law.

As a former journalist, Jay communicates effectively and works efficiently on deadline and under pressure. She has quickly established herself as an efficient and precise researcher. She has drafted high-quality legal opinions and documents, while supporting others on her team. She has also developed strong intuitions to litigation files, knowing when to suggest settling and when to fight. Jay prides herself in negotiating fair settlements for the clients she serves.

In law school, she thrived academically and was rewarded with a series of scholarships and awards. She is most proud of winning the Ad IDEM/Canadian Media Lawyers Association Freedom of Expression Writing Prize in 2018. This prize is a national award, which she won for her essay entitled “The Unfairness of Fair Comment: How the defense to defamation went wrong in Canada and how to fix it.”

She also won awards for her community service, dedication to practicing law in French, and for her academic achievements.

Value to Clients

“My experience in various fast-paced industries means that clients can count on me to be unflappable under pressure. I’m a precise writer and researcher, too!”

Outside the Office

As a lifelong Edmontonian, Jay has many deep roots in the community. She loves spending time outdoors running, cycling, and Nordic skiing. She also has a passion for experimental, avant-garde, and generally strange art. She’s also a big fan of her two children.
