$30,000 to be distributed between five organizations

CALGARY (July 4, 2019) – Field Law, a western and northern regional business law firm, is pleased to announce the Southern Alberta grand prize winner and four additional recipients of its Community Fund Program (the Program).

The Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter‘s Caring Dads For Healthy Safe Kids Project is the 2019 Community Fund Program grand prize winner, with the additional awards granted to Children’s Cottage Society, Stitch It Forward Society of Lethbridge , Making Changes Association and Taber Lost Paws Society.

The Program has been supporting community initiatives for the past seven years, with more than $475,000 donated to date. In 2019, the Program will distribute another $75,000 to community initiatives, with $30,000 going to recipients in Northern and Southern Alberta, and $15,000 going to recipients in the Northwest Territories.

Winners of the Program are selected by a community judging panel and public voting, with 24,337 votes cast in 2019. Of the 86 applications the Program received this year, 37 came from organizations in southern Alberta. The Northern Alberta and Northwest Territories recipients will be announced at local events later this month.

SOUTHERN ALBERTA GRAND PRIZE WINNER:

Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter - Caring Dads for Healthy Safe Kids - $10,000

The Caring Dads Program aims to help children in homes with family violence and abuse by encouraging fathers to make healthier choices. It will help men become aware of why they choose abusive behaviour, increase their awareness and application of child-centred fathering, and promote respectful co-parenting with children's mothers regardless of the status of their relationships. It is an evidence- based counseling model designed from the premise that violence against women and violence against children are intricately intertwined, and that these two issues both can and should be addressed together.

SOUTHERN ALBERTA FUNDING RECIPIENTS:

Children's Cottage Society - Crisis Nursery Volunteer Program - $5,000

The Crisis Nursery in Bridgeland provides a safe haven for children whose parents may be dealing with mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction, challenges with the law, living in poverty, experiencing violence in the home or living in shelters. The critical social issue the Crisis Nursery deals with is preventing harm and neglect to children while their parents are dealing with a crisis in their lives. It provides 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week, short-term care for newborns and children up to age 8. In 2018, this refuge helped more than 1,300 children from 821 families deal with crises in their own lives knowing their children are cared for and safe. To be able to provide this care it takes a very special team, and the work of the Children’s Cottage Society is made possible everyday by the work of volunteers, especially at the Crisis Nursery; the funding will be used to expand the volunteer program.

Stitch It Forward Society of Lethbridge - Women Giving Back Through Their Talents - $5,000

Women Giving Back Through Their Talents is an initiative which creates and collects items needed in the community, such as blankets, chemotherapy hats, seat belt protectors, altered clothing for physically disabled people and heart pillows. They encourage those who have a need to come to them and let them create an answer, such as the alteration of clothes to accommodate the ports required for chemotherapy. The funding will be put towards renting a location where people can meet together to make these items, as well teaching new volunteers with an interest in learning how to quilt or knit.

Making Changes Association - Walk In Closet - $5,000

The Walk In Closet provides women with no-cost consultations and professional business/work attire to support them to obtain or maintain employment, return to school or engage in volunteer opportunities. Participants are offered gently used quality, fashionable clothing and accessories to look and feel their best, and an orientation on appropriate attire for job interviews and the workplace. At the end of an appointment, they receive 4-5 outstanding outfits suitable for work. Each appointment is delivered by Volunteer Image Consultants from the community who share their own knowledge and experience on professional dress and assist in selecting clothing and accessories participants will feel confident in along with a selection of personal care items. The funding will go towards finding clothing, accessories and supplies to supplement to the donations the organization receives.

Taber Lost Paws Society - Taber Lost Paws Society Animal Shelter - $5,000

The Town of Taber’s animal shelter is in a state of disrepair and does not meet the overall needs of the dogs kept there, resulting in discussion about closing the shelter completely and moving the dogs to a location outside the community. The Taber Lost Paws Society was formed when the town began looking for a group of people that would be willing to come forward and take on the challenge of building and operating a new shelter. Funds are being raised to build the new shelter, which The Taber Lost Paws Society will then operate solely through a group of volunteers.
