Field Law Announces Award Winners of the 2017 Field Law Community Fund Program
Fifth year of program breaks public voting records to support community initiatives in the NWT
July 17, 2017
Field Law, a western and northern regional law firm, is excited to announce the Northwest Territories winners of the Field Law Community Fund Program (the Program). This year, the Program celebrated its fifth year of supporting local community initiatives in Southern Alberta, Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
Field Law awarded three prizes to community projects in the Northwest Territories market. This year’s winners are the NWT Breast Health/Breast Cancer Action Group, the Mackenzie Recreation Association, and the Food First Foundation.
The Community Fund Program supports community initiatives in the markets in which Field Law operates. In 2017, the Program will distribute a total of $75,000 to community initiatives, with $15,000 going to the Northwest Territories market and $30,000 going to each of the Northern and Southern Alberta markets.
The 2017 Program received nearly 100 applications and a record turnout for online voting. Winners of the Program are decided by a community judging panel and public voting. This year, the Program earned a record-breaking total of 50,018 votes across all three markets.
“Our 2017 winners are a diverse group of initiatives making uniquely positive impacts on our community,” says Jack Williams, Partner at Field Law, “We’re proud to celebrate the fifth year of the Community Fund Program by giving back to the initiatives that enrich the community we live and work in, and we see it as a chance to look back at how the Program has grown.”
Field Law is pleased to announce the following Northwest Territories market winners of the 2017 Community Fund Program:
“Tastemakers”: GRAND PRIZE WINNER - $6,000
Food First Foundation is a registered charity that supports nutrition education programs in schools, with the goal of encouraging a healthy population of children and youth for future generations. The Tastemakers project tackles food insecurity in the North by providing students with healthy meals and snacks in addition to educational programs that instil healthy choices in children. Funding from the Program will continue to build the capacity of the Program, aiming to increase the 28 schools and over 800 children benefitting from Tastemakers in 2017.
“Physical Literacy Champion Summit”: WINNER - $5,000
The Mackenzie Recreation Association (MRA) supports the quality of life of Mackenzie residents by developing opportunities for recreation, volunteering and leadership. Each year, the annual Physical Literacy Summit trains members of the community as physical literacy champions for their community to promote healthy, active lifestyles and community involvement. The funds provided by the Program will allow the MRA to continue to train up to two champions for each of the 19 communities in the region to teach children, youth and adults healthy habits.
“Cancer Support for Women in Yellowknife”: WINNER - $4,000
The NWT Breast Health/Breast Cancer Action Group aims to increase the support available for women living with any type of cancer in Yellowknife. The Group facilitates presentations, workshops and monthly peer support groups. These include “Look Good Feel Better” events that empower women who are living with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. The Program will support the women experiencing cancer, peer support volunteers and healthcare providers that make the Action Group possible.
