Pursue Excellence

"I joined Field's Edmonton office to complete my articles after clerking with the Courts. I was very satisfied with my articling experience here. I received excellent mentoring and had the opportunity to gain experience in a broad range of practice areas. A particular advantage of Field's articling program is that, although Court students are called to the Bar after only five months of articling, Court students here are given the full range and depth of experience. I would not hesitate to recommend Field LLP to anyone seeking an interesting and well-rounded articling experience."

Why Field Law?

Field Law is one of the premier law firms in Western Canada, with a reputation for outstanding client service and high ethical standards. Through our offices in Edmonton, Calgary and Yellowknife, and a legal team of more than 95 lawyers, we represent a large and diverse group of clients. Our firm does work in virtually all practice areas, and we are therefore able to expose our articling students to the widest possible range of work and a variety of practice styles.

What to Expect

The articling process at Field Law is designed to be exciting, challenging, and rewarding for the student, with the emphasis on education. Our firm’s top priority for lawyers and articling students alike is quality work and ethical practice. We are dedicated to preparing articling students for the practice of law.

As an articling student at Field Law, you will be ushered through the transition from "law school" problem solving to problem solving with clients. You will learn the skills required to properly analyze legal issues and devise practical and effective solutions for clients. You will learn the essential elements of good legal practice, including legal drafting, negotiation, and the effective organization and presentation of opinions and ideas.

Significant time and resources are invested in developing articling students and associates into respected and capable members of the Bar. As a result, articling students at Field Law are expected to take their work seriously and to excel. However, this hard work is not something that should come at the expense of all other facets of an articling student’s life. We believe that a balanced lifestyle is crucial, and that a vital family, social, and recreational life is the key to a collegial workplace and longevity within the profession.

Articling students at our firm are actively included in all firm meetings and events, and in all respects are treated as vital members of the Field Law team. We hire our students with a view to their ultimately becoming candidates for partnership, a philosophy that is reflected in our high student retention rates.
